Heading back home after Flossenburg, we decided to go spend the rest of our day exploring the unique city of Regensburg. We parked near the Danube river and walked across one of the many bridges that cross the rushing waters. Walter was our guide again today, weaving in history and cute anecdotes as we walked (yes, walked and walked) around
the city. We visited churches from many different eras... Baroque, Gothic and Roman. Each one harbored its own special architecture and embellishments.
Baroque boasts very ornate bold touches everywhere, a little "over the top" for my personal take, but impressive nonetheless. Gothic is more simplistic but still incredibly stunning in its presentation. My favorite example of this era was the St. Peter's Cathedral in the heart of Regensburg, began around the early 13th century. Its crowning glory are two incredible towers with steeples that were finished much later than the original building. Walter also took us to a couple of different Roman sites. The Romans occupied this area of Germany in the early 1100's and evidence of their rein are seen in many places. We saw a very old Roman church, where the front had been enclosed in glass so as to preserve the ancient stone. Later in our walk we stumbled across a Roman wall that had been around even longer than the church had.
We traversed up and down the cobblestone streets, finding beauty everywhere we turned. The majestic buildings, different colors and a variety of ornate metal touches on many of them. Walter took us to the top of a restaurant that had an impressive view of the city. He also took us by the Mayor's office after we had run into and met the "third" mayor.
After logging another 8 or 9 miles today, we were hungry and tired. I had requested that Walter PLEASE take us to the Sausage Kitchen (Wurster Kuchen) that was my favorite place to eat during my last visit. We all sat down to a cold, dark beer and some rye bread that our
server placed in a basket on our table. Walter ordered the potato soup and the rest of us asked for the sausage mit (with) saurkraut... YUM!!! We walked slowly back to our car, enjoying the weather as it started to cool off. Another day with mostly sunny skies was a blessing after some of the cold stays we were met with in Paris and London.
Home for a relaxing evening... blogging, sending work emails, checking up the new of the world, and watching the opening ceremony of Uli's Special Olympic games. Time to just chill and take a breather as we head towards our last day in Germany tomorrow. We have to leave on Wednesday. Gute nacht!
I can't believe how much sunshine your getting in Europe! Walter sounds like s great tour guide and hosts
